Water is coming through the ceiling. What to do first.

Move everything out from under the wet area and keep people out of that room, then shut off the water at the main valve. A ceiling holding water can come down all at once, and it gives very little warning before it does.

First, treat it as a weight problem

Drywall soaks up water and gets heavy. A ceiling that is dripping is annoying. A ceiling that is sagging, bulging, or has a dark bowed patch is carrying a load it was never built to carry, and it fails suddenly rather than gradually.

So the first move is not a bucket. It is clearing the floor underneath and keeping people and pets out of the room.

Second, stop the water

Almost always the source is above: a supply line, a leaking fixture, a failed water heater, an overflowing bath or toilet, or an appliance line. Close the main shut-off valve, which is usually on the pipe where the supply enters the house. Where to find it and how it turns is worth knowing before you need it.

If the water is coming from a roof or a storm rather than a pipe, the main valve will do nothing. In that case the goal is containment, not shut-off, and the job is to get through the storm before anything can be properly assessed. If you are in an apartment and the water is coming from the unit above, your own valve will do nothing either, and the first moves are different.

One useful distinction while you wait: clean water from a supply line is a very different problem from water that has passed through a toilet, a sewer line, or a flooded yard. If it is discolored, smells, or came from anything sanitary, stay out of it entirely, and treat it as a health problem rather than a spill.

Third, decide about the bulge

If the ceiling is holding a visible pocket of water, it is going to release that water one way or another. Releasing it deliberately, at the lowest point, is more controlled than waiting for the drywall to give way and bring the ceiling down with it.

Do this only if all of these are true:

  • The circuit to that room is off, and there is no fixture in or near the bulge.
  • You can reach the low point of the bulge from the side, standing on something stable, not directly underneath it.
  • The floor is clear and there is a bucket or bin below.

Then make one small hole at the very bottom of the bulge with a screwdriver, and step back. It will run fast. More holes may be needed as the water finds its way to them.

If any of those conditions are not true, do not do it. Close the door, stay out, and let it fail on its own. A collapsed ceiling is a repair. An injury is not.

Fourth, contain and document

Once the water has somewhere to go:

  • Put down buckets or bins, with towels underneath to stop splashing onto the floor.
  • Pull back carpet if you can lift it without moving furniture, since the pad underneath holds water against the subfloor.
  • Photograph the ceiling, the room, and anything damaged, before you clean up or throw anything away.
  • Take a video walking through the space and say out loud what you are looking at.

Do not put a bucket under a sagging ceiling and then go to bed. If it lets go overnight, the water spreads across the whole floor and into the rooms next to it.

What the ceiling tells you about where it started

A is the failed pipe. B is where you see the stain. Water runs along the top of the drywall and comes down at the first seam it finds, which is often in a different room.

Water rarely enters directly above where it appears. It runs along the top of the drywall, follows joists, and comes down at the first low point or seam it finds. That means the wet patch on your ceiling is often several feet from the actual leak, and sometimes in a different room.

That matters for two reasons. It is why a plumber may open more of the ceiling than you expected. And it is why the drying job is usually larger than the stain suggests: the cavity above, the insulation in it, and the top plate of the wall are all likely wet even though you cannot see them.

What happens after the dripping stops

The visible water is the smaller half of this. Insulation holds water for a long time and dries very slowly. A ceiling cavity has no airflow. Everything in there stays damp unless something forces it dry, which is why the timeline before mold starts is the thing that should drive your decisions from here.

Whether to call a plumber first or a restoration company first depends on whether the leak is still active. The short answer is here, and it comes down to one question: is water still arriving?

Clear the room and keep people out. Kill the circuit and stay away from any fixture in the wet area. Shut off the water. Relieve a bulge only if the power is off, there is no fixture near it, and you can do it from the side. Document everything before you clean up.
