You put a small fire out yourself. Now what?
Call the fire service anyway, even though it is out and even though it feels excessive. Fire spreads into cavities, and a small fire that has touched a wall, a ceiling, or anything with a void behind it can still be burning where you cannot see. They attend, they check it with a thermal camera, and they do not charge for it.
The other reason to call is the record. A written incident report is what a claim rests on later.
Why a fire that is out may not be
Flames stop being visible long before the material stops being hot. If the fire was against a wall, under a cabinet, near a outlet, or anywhere with a void, heat can carry into insulation, framing, or dust and smolder for hours before it reappears with more oxygen. This is the reason the fire service stays after a fire looks finished, and the reason houses burn down at three in the morning after a fire everyone thought was out at nine.
The thermal camera is the whole point of the call. You cannot do that part.
What to do in the meantime
- Ventilate, once you are certain it is out, so the smoke leaves the building rather than settling.
- Switch off the heating and air conditioning. Ducts distribute soot through the whole house, which turns one scorched cabinet into every room.
- Switch off the circuit for the affected area at the panel if anything electrical was involved or is scorched.
- Do not wipe anything with a wet cloth. Soot is oily and water sets it into the surface. What smoke does, and why the wrong cleaning is permanent.
- Photograph it before anything is touched or moved.
- Keep the thing that burned, if it is an appliance or a device. It is evidence, and it may be a product fault.
What caused it decides what happens next
An appliance or a device. Unplug it, keep it, and photograph the label with the model and serial number. Check whether it is subject to a recall, which is a genuinely common finding for battery devices, clothes dryers, and small kitchen appliances. Report it to the manufacturer, and to the consumer product safety regulator if it is a device that failed on its own.
Something electrical in the fabric of the building. That is not a cleaning job; that is an electrician, and the circuit stays off until then. A burning smell from an outlet has its own sequence.
A pan or the stove. The most common household fire by a wide margin. Never water on burning oil: turn the heat off and cover it. Then treat the smoke as the actual damage, because a pan fire puts greasy residue through a whole house. What to do about smoke with no real fire.
A candle, a heater, or a dryer. All of them worth changing a habit over. Running a space heater properly.
Your extinguisher, afterwards
A used extinguisher is an empty extinguisher, even if it still has pressure and even if you only gave it a short burst. Replace or recharge it now rather than discovering it is empty next time.
Dry powder extinguishers leave a corrosive residue that damages electronics and metal, so clean it up promptly and thoroughly, and expect anything electronic it covered to need assessment.
While you are thinking about it, test the smoke alarms and replace any that are more than about ten years old.
Should you report it to insurance?
Yes, report it. Whether to claim is a separate decision you can make afterwards.
A small fire often produces smoke damage that is worth considerably more than the burn, particularly if the HVAC ran or if plastics burned, and people routinely underestimate it. Report, get the incident number from the fire service, and then decide against the deductible. What a fire policy covers.
If it turns out the residue went further than one room, that is a contractor rather than a weekend, and the claim will matter.
